This Memorial Day weekend, your destination for fun is Winfield, TN, site of the Appalachian Dumplin’ Festival. This annual food and music festival pays tribute to dumplings, a southern tradition that was a standard on the tables of our ancestors.
The Appalachian Dumplin’ Festival has become a Memorial Day weekend tradition in upper east Tennessee and southeastern Kentucky, as folks from near and far come to Winfield to relive our southern heritage. At the center of the festival is dumplings, a sweet dough that is boiled in a variety of meat or fruit stocks to make a mouth-watering main course or dessert. While most everyone has enjoyed chicken and dumplings, attendees will have the opportunity to sample a variety of dessert dumplings made from traditional fruits including apple, cherry, blackberry, blueberry and more.
Of course, if dumplings aren't your fare, then the festival also offers a wide variety of other popular foods, including hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue and more.
One of the most popular events at the festival is the Firemen’s Competition, a series of training and skills drills that pit members of area fire department against each other and the clock. The festival will also hold a horseshoe pitching tournament, an antique car show, quilt show, arts and crafts, games, prizes and good clean family entertainment.
